Konrad Merz, pseudonym of Kurt Lehmann (1908 - 1999), was a German Jew who fled his country after Hitler took power. Settling in the North of the Netherlands, he wrote his novel 8A Man Falls out of Germany*, published in 1936 by the Dutch publishing house Querido. During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Merz had to go into hiding. The Dutch literary critic Menno ter Braak compared Merz’s writing to that of Kafka and Dostojevski.
